i don't know what today's eighth graders are learning in language arts (aka "english" back in my day) or why they would need a "poster" of a slice of pumpkin pie to accompany a power point (GAG) presentation of the same subject.

my eighth grader hates drawing, and i'm ok with that. so when he asked me to do his "poster" (actually a crappy piece of large-ish construction paper) for him, i was ok with that, too.

ta daaaaa! primitive enough that it's hopefully believable as his work. i hope he passes. when i do my kids' artwork (yes, i do sometimes, what do i care, they don't want to be artists), they tend to get terrible grades.

i feel like these broken shells look like broken porcelain, and i want to draw them, make pendants from them, hang them from my walls, have some in my pockets.

i'm sure this is just a phase. but for now, i'm drawing them in various ways using various mediums onto paint chip cards (we are allegedly painting in our house, these are the discarded color choices) and the goal is to sell them, inexpensively, on etsy.

i made a sort of american indian head dress out of cut paper. i say "sort of" since i did no formal research, just my imagination. i initially wanted to mount it onto a rainbow (middle shot) but ended up using it as a stencil instead, to create the first and more simple image.

the bottom image is just meh. so only the top made the cut.

i found 3 older framed pieces and, with those, am at 24. just in case tomorrow i poop out

so may. there is a cool store in lancaster, pa called HMB Designs, and i will have 24 pieces of my original art hanging there for the month. of may. there is a large and traditionally well populated arts "event" (the exact title escapes me) that will take place on mother's day weekend this year.

last night i carved a feather stamp out of a pink eraser. the photo on top is a very blue-er-ized photo thereof.

today is my birthday, which is my favorite holiday of the year. it's a bonanza, maybe a week-long event for me, where i giggle a lot and accept kind words gracefully and eat more mcdonald's than i usually do.

this year i'm diverting some of the attention to a little girl named Lila. she was born with Cerebral Palsy and that sucks. CP is a condition affecting brain and nervous functions involving any or all of the following: movement, mobility, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking. it is a lifelong condition and there is no cure, but studies involving stem cell/umbilical cord transplant look promising.

a group of artists (the Creative Coconuts) have come up with the idea of creating a Blog Hop, where people take turns blogging about Lila and CP in general, with the goals of enlightening their readers and hopefully raising money towards providing Lila with stem cell therapy.

yesterday evening i received this phone call from the owner of a local gallery where some of my art is hung. lauren had a customer in the store who was looking for one of my banana pieces. i think i only have two, svennana and banishna (which is my icon on this blog), and i only ever brought banishna to the gallery. lauren and i were both confused, somehow believing there was indeed another banana drawing at some point...

if you know me, you know i am all about good customer service. so i told lauren i would bring in my other banana for the customer right away. so last night i printed svennana. of course, the colors were all wrong. at the time i figured i was just out of ink. now i'm realizing i may have set it up as an rgb file and not a cmyk. at any rate, it looked horrible so i grabbed my cray-pas and here is what i came up with.

i took apart a goodwill frame (@ 12 x 15), cleaned it up, rubbed in a dash of red ink (i'm out of spray paint), and voila. i am waiting now, ever so anxiously, to hear what the customer thinks. i hope she's not too disappointed. but i swear, there was no other banana

update: svennana and banishna sold. i'm excited. but i will miss them

today was so gorgeous, but a little cold. i met Amy at the deli (the one real deli nearby) and got there early so i could take a few pics. this is my old neighborhood, there's a college a block away, so i didn't look strange at all as i photographed the sidewalk.

look at the photo below to see what i'm doing. i'm literally aiming my digital camera at the viewfinder of the box camera. this is where you can see that a box device, blocking all external light, would come in handy. i tried paper towel and tp rolls; too small. i have to stop being lazy and construct something.

what i did today, friday, day of clouds

so, forever i have been intending to do a street lamps receding sort of drawing. and i started it, finally, on a largeish piece of butcher brown paper. i just inked the outlines, then penciled in where i wanted there to be a sliver of rainbow (i know, but i'm just not ready to give that up yet). i used oil pastels, craypas, to start coloring.

then i thought, hey! how about if i sloppily lay down some gesso, leaving the main light and rainbow mostly intact, and then i can go over the other lamps AND add some electrical wiring. power lines, that sort of thing. on TOP of the gesso.

but after slopping on the gesso, the paper was puddling and warping and i had another "great" idea: take a clean sheet of butcher paper and iron them both flat!

note to all: wet gesso ironed between two sheets of paper sort of equals glue. so i peeled the pages apart as best i could. i cut the "new" page up and am messing with just ironing craypas color, and i will use these various sized sheets as drawing paper (the bottom photo). as for the original drawing, well... i just don't know yet (the top photo).

so i bought a non-working kodak duaflex 2 box camera on ebay for, like, under 10 bucks. the top flips open and that's the viewfinder. i hold my digital camera so it can "see" through that viewfinder, and i take pictures that way.

i'm also starting a broken old camera collection for drawing purposes. but i digress.

you can google "through the viewfinder" and get tons of info. i'm supposed to build this tube that will go from the duaflex viewfinder up to the lens of my digital, and this will block extra light/reflections. i have to do that. i'm just lazy.

some of the pictures i've taken, i have then played with in photoshop. like the trees - i totally played with the exposure so the blue of the sky emerged. is that cheating? yeah i don't care.

so. there you have it. i'm terrible at explaining things, so let me know if you need clarification

this is my desk RIGHT NOW. ok, right now is over. time. it does that. but it's still relatively right now and, actually my desk does still look this way. except that i've pulled my keyboard over a little... i hope to finish and color the camera drawing you can see soon.

BOOKS: i have read richard yates (the author, as well as the tao lin book by that title, but i already told you that) and discovered that i love his work. "revolutionary road" and "disturbing the peace" were just, for me, wow.

i've also read a ton of short stories lately, alice munro and alan beard, david foster wallace (whose most recently published biography-ish book i also read). the biggest surprise for me was that i enjoyed ethan hawke's second novel, "ash wednesday." enjoyed it. craziness. though the end was way too hollywood, but otherwise.

now i'm reading "then we came to the end" by joshua ferris. it was released a few years ago and since i haven't worked in an "office" office in a while, the book never appealed to me. but i found it at the goodwill and decided to go for it, and i am glad.

speaking of the goodwill, i wanted this mug because "shine" reminds me of "sliver of hope" which makes me smile. and these sparkly slippers, brand new no less! but, alas, not my size. ah, well, there will always be more treasures to find.

REBEKAH has been doing a bunch of ponies and horses, and it's always been a favorite theme of mine. to view, not create. with the exception of the logo i drew for GILLIAN, but she told me exactly what she wanted. she makes the greatest horse art as well.

anyway... i was testing myself last night: could i stay simple? so i cut paper. the flags are from some random computer paper sheet, and the horse is from a Roman candy bar wrapper (my friend Lisa brought me chocolate from Rome last year, which was delicious). so. here it is. a simple homage to the horses of REBEKAH and GILLIAN

reworked zombie green beans with sliver of rainbow

i printed out the z.g.b.w.s.o.r. and decided to add more. because that's what i do.

first i created a, what do you call it, not a stencil but a mask? for making sure the color i wanted to apply wouldn't hit the knife, beans, or rainbow bits. then i dribbled 3 colored inks onto paper, rollered them into a mishmosh, and applied to the area not covered by the mask.

then, because that just wasn't enough, i took silver ink and splashed it onto a rolled up wad of paper towel, and blotted some shimmer over the whole darn thing.

i cannot upload any more photos (blogspot!!!) but trust me, it was a visual feast. incredible. it's probably on youtube like a hundred times if you want to see more. the music was just amazing, and this album... well, it has always meant a lot to me. seeing and hearing Roger Waters perform it was, i'm sure, a once in a lifetime chance for me. rumor had it David Gilmore might be popping in, but he didn't. maybe the thursday show?

firstly, simplification is clearly not a concept i grasp.

this is a rendering of a small ceramic lemon pitcher, possibly even a creamer. i have a collection of ceramic fruit tableware. i have spent hours trolling local thrift shops and yard sales to find my pieces.

but i'm over it.

so this lemon, and the rasperry mug, and the apple cookie jar, and all the rest of it, are going to be donated to the goodwill tomorrow.

mid-century modern. that's where it's at.

ok i have just noticed that i photo'd michael cunningham's "specimen days" and not his newest, which i forget the title of. which is in and of itself quite telling. i just completed "the american girl" which made me think really hard, very non-linear narrative, but i'm definitely in for the next installment (there is a second book, i just don't think it's available in english yet). right now i'm enjoying "the surf guru"

i started this ages ago, as a possible alternative to a logo design i did for my friend and yoga instructor, sharon (see final logo here). since i hate having unfinished pages in my sketchbook, i went back and completed this.

i woke up feeling kinda hyper and so my plan was to go immediately to blick and purchase a large bit of brown paper, like the size of me, and gesso it and use cray-pas to make a large yamaha guitar (this guitar lives where my kids take lessons and i find it very visually pleasing).

however! blick was not open for another hour! my mania was waning, so i came home and scanned this drawing and photoshopped a sliver of rainbow into it. i have finished the book, "player one," and it was fantastic until the point at which it abruptly and simply just ... ended. but i'm still glad i read it, because what was there was great, imo
